Creating an Engraved Limestone Memorial for Saint Antoninus Athletic Club: A Lasting Tribute for Cherished Memories

We recently had the honor of engraving a limestone memorial for Saint Antoninus Athletic Club on Cincinnati’s Westside to celebrate the life and legacy of Denny Binder, a cherished member of their community. This memorial now stands proudly in the club’s ball fields—a place where families gather, kids play, and memories are made. As parents of Saint Antoninus alums ourselves, this project was about more than just engraving words into stone. It was about crafting a lasting tribute that would honor Denny’s impact on his community and create a meaningful space for future generations.

Ohio Limestone, Sourced with Care and Quality

For our memorial, we’re committed to using only the finest materials, from limestone to granite, all sourced from within the State of Ohio. After exploring options, Saint Antoninus ultimately chose limestone for its strength, durability, and timeless beauty—qualities that echo the spirit of the tribute. Working closely with Andrew from Stone Center Cincinnati, we handpicked a piece of limestone that felt fitting for Denny’s legacy—something both beautiful and enduring. By sourcing locally, we support our community and ensure that the stone is naturally suited to Ohio’s outdoor conditions, enhancing its longevity in the very environment it’s meant to honor.

Deep, Lasting Engraving That Honors Memories

When creating a memorial, we believe every detail matters. For Denny’s tribute, we approached the engraving with meticulous care, etching each line to a depth of 1/16 inch to create a bold, enduring impression. This depth not only ensures that his name and legacy will remain clearly visible but also allows the tribute to withstand the elements with grace. We selected a font that’s both elegant and easy to read, lending a touch of dignity and respect to the inscription.

To further elevate the memorial, we lightly sanded the edges to create a gentle bevel—a refined detail that adds polish and smoothness to the stone. This subtle touch of craftsmanship, paired with a double border, frames the inscription and gives the piece a balanced , dignified presence. Set within the athletic club’s ball field, this memorial feels perfectly at home in a space where the community gathers to celebrate, honor, and remember.

Highlighting Every Word with Lithochrome Paint

To make the engraving even more impactful, we used black lithochrome paint—a weather-resistant paint that bonds deeply with the limestone. Lithochrome doesn’t just add color; it becomes part of the stone, giving each word strong contrast and making the message easy to read from a distance. This bond ensures that Denny’s tribute will stay bold and clear, rain or shine, year after year. As a final touch, we applied a sealant to protect the stone, preserving its beauty and strength for generations to come.

Limestone in Memorials and Inscriptions

Limestone has been used for centuries as a material for memorials and inscriptions, valued for its durability and natural beauty. Ancient civilizations, from the Egyptians to the Greeks, chose limestone for monuments, statues, and even early forms of writing tablets because it was abundant, easy to shape, and capable of withstanding the elements. The stone’s fine grain allows for detailed carving and etching, making it ideal for preserving names, dates, and messages. Today, we carry on this tradition by sourcing high-quality limestone in a variety of shapes and sizes, allowing us to create custom memorials suited to any need. This connection to history, combined with the versatility of modern sourcing, makes limestone an ideal choice.
